Blogging 101 – leverage your site using social networking

This is the continuation series of “Blogging 101 – Plan Your Move Early.” I want to share the small knowledge that I had so far. I know I still need to learn more, but I think you might benefit from it, so I share it anyway.

Social Networking

What is social networking? Social networking is simply the way we increase the exposure of our business or social contacts through other individuals. Many people don’t realize that we are building our social network everyday, either in business, social life, and Internet. How many new friends you got in these past couple months? How many new business vendors you were dealing with in these past couple months? How many new friends that you added to your Facebook, Friendster, or MySpace account? We do all these things everyday without even realizing that we are increasing the exposure of  our self.

In blogging context, we are using social networking to increase the exposure of our blog through other individuals (or other websites). Basically, we are creating a “buzz” and relying on others to spread the “buzz” to other people. Several methods that I used for social networking:

  1. Digg
People are hunger for news. They are constantly looking for new news about their area of interests. The best way to do this is to go to a website that offers you links to the current news that were submitted by others who had the same interests like they do. The answer is Digg.com. In Digg.com, news are seperated by different categories and peple can submit links to those different categories. What you want to do is that after you post your blog, digg it yourself in the correct category depending on what your post is about. What we are doing here is creating a FREE advertising to targeted audiences. WHAT???? you might ask. When people go to digg.com, they are searching for news under categories that they have already had interest on. By submitting our blog post under the right category, it will make our story to show under “upcoming” stories of the category that we choosed. In other word, our links will be seen by those people who already had interest in our topic. This will increase the likelyhood they will click the link and visit our blog. The best thing is it’s FREE. Don’t you love free stuff? I do :)

  2. StumbleUpon
If you have never used StumbleUpon (SU), just be careful. It could be addicting. I installed SU toolbar for firefox. What it does is to allow you to surf “random” sites according to your preference of interest. You just never know what’s the next website. The idea is to stumble your own blog post to let others know about your blog. The key is to stumble it to the right category, so others can find your site.

  3. AlphaInventions
This service is recently new, but quite effective sometime. AlphaInventions show slides of website in a cycle. You can include your site in their cycle to allow others to look, at least, at your page. You can be kicked out of the cycle if someone else bump you off from the cycle list.
Some of AlphaInventions’ visitors will just “fly” by your blog, and some of them will stick around and explore your blog more. Although the quality of the visitor itself is questionable, you can, at least, get more visitors instantly using this service.
  4. Twitter
Micro blogging….. It’s something that you did not hear that much until these past few years. Wikipedia defines micro-blogging as a form of multimedia blogging that allows users to send brief text updates (say, 140 characters or fewer) or micromedia such as photos or audio clips and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user. To do this, I choose Twitter, just because it’s more popular here in United States. If you were in Asia, plurk is probably more popular there.
How do you use Twitter? Twitter is not just a great social tool to find new friends, but it is also great to promote your blog. There are two roles in Twitter, “Following” and “Follower”. By following someone, it means that you will get any Twitter updates from that person. By having followers, it means that your twitter updates will be received by your followers, but their twitter updates will not be seen by you unless you are following them back.
How can use twitter to increase your blog’s exposure? really simple. Just update your twitter status about your new blog post with the link to your post at the end. This is the fastest tool to let other people know about your new blog post, even faster than RSS. Some Twitter addicts leave their Twitter always on (either through their cellphone or desktop application), which means that when you update your twitter, your followers will get your updated status almost instantaneously. If you have 1000 followers, it means that 1000 of your followers just got instant notification that you have new blog post. Wow…what do you think about that? not bad, right?
  5. Facebook
This is my favorite one. I use facebook (FB) quite a bit for my personal use. Most of my friends are in FB, so we contact each other through it. With FB, you can share pictures, video, chat, update your current status of what you are doing now, create a fan page, install applications, and many others. One of the aspect of FB that we can use to increase exposure is the “update status” feature. Like what we do in Twitter, you can do the same thing here. Share your new blog post by updating your status that points people to your page. Since people who are able to see your updated status are your friends. They will be more likely to check out your page.

I’m sure there are many other ways to leverage your site using social networking, and I realy want to know them so I can try them out. We are learning by doing, right? :) If you know any, please share them here in the comments section.

Blogging 101 – plan your move early

I was encouraged by Ryan’s conclusions on “How To Inflate Your Social Media Statistics” to stop looking too much on my visitor stats, and start making concrete strategies on how to establish myself in the blogger community. So, that’s what I am going to do. I start gathering my thoughts on how to increase the exposure of my blog to the online community. I admitted that it’s not easy to establish myself, since I consider myself as a newbie in this subject. However, I got so many knowledge that I want to share with my beloved reader like you, so that you can, at least, benefit from it. Before you are posting your next blog post, plan your move first on what are you going to do with your blog. It’s better to start as early as possible to get the best result.

Yesterday, I start putting my thoughts together in a piece of paper. I’m sorry for my bad handwritings :) I’ll explain this more thorough below.

As you can see, everything revolves around http://myinternetcorner.com. I will break this down in my next several blog posts. I was planning to break everything down in this one blog post, but it was too long, so I will break this chart into several posts. For now, I will only discuss about RSS.

RSS

It’s a great tool to increase your site’s exposure. I found out that visiting every site one by one is just not efficient. When you are following more than five websites, it will be really frustrating to check each sites every time for new updates. What I did was that I subscribed to their RSS using my RSS reader to check their updates. The most popular RSS reader is Google Reader. However, I prefer to use Mozilla Thunderbird to check my RSS.

Your visitors will do the same thing. They will see if your blog bring them any value or not, and then, they will decide if they will follow your blog or not. Most likely, if they follow your blog, they will subscribe to your RSS. To enable some sort of tracking to my RSS spread, I used Feedburner to monitor my feed count and RSS subscribers. It’s easy, free to use, and one of Google’s product, so its quality is guaranteed.

Your RSS is also crawled by search engine and other services as an easy way to tell them that you have new content on your site. Therefore, I always “ping” every time I publish a post. Currrently, the two services that I use are pingoat and pingomatic. What they do is they will notify major RSS crawlers engines (Technorati, FeedBurner, Google blogsearch, etc.) that you have new post, so that your new post will be crawled and be included in their list.

My next “Blogging 101″ post will be about social networking. Be sure to subscribe to the RSS Feed so that you can be notified whenever the next blog post out.

Blogging 101 – Know Yourself

Blogging 101 - Know YourselfIt just hit me the other day. As a new blogger, I still have much to learn from people, books, articles, internet, and, of course, another bloggers. Suddenly, light bulb was coming out from my head saying, “hey, why don’t you share what you are learning with others?” and I’m thinking, it’s so true. My hope is so that with my sharing to others about my learning curve, it can help people who wants to have a blog, but don’t know where to start, which direction they need to go, and what are the mistakes so that you don’t have to fall at the same pit like I did.

The 1st lesson – Know yourself

This is so important. A lot of people want to blog just because they saw people’s blog, and they want to have a blog like theirs. This is not necessarily wrong; however, it’s not enough. It’s not easy to start a blog. It’s even harder to maintain a blog. Starting a blog only requires little technical skills, but to maintain a blog, it requires determination, consistency, and creativity. That’s why maintaining a blog is way much harder than to just start a blog.

Do you really want to blog?
Ask yourself this question over and over again until you are really sure. Several questions you can ask yourself to help you find the answer:|

  1. Are you really passionate about something?
Blogging is not about collecting articles from all over the internet, and dump it to your blog. Instead, you need to have a passion about topics that you can discuss in your blog. These passions could be your hobby, your job, your position, your hometown, your organization/business, your favorite figures, etc. The more you are passionate about something, the more thorough and enjoyable your blogging time will be.
  2. Can you stand sitting in from four computer for a long period of time?
Let me be  honest to you. I spent a lot of hours sitting in front of my computer to blog. There are a lot of things in my mind regarding my blog. I started with what kind of theme for my blog I want to use, what widgets should I put in the sidebar, how do I let people know about my blog, what should I post next, and so on. So, if you are the type of people that doesn’t like to seat in front of your computer for hours, consider again your decision to start a blog.
  3. What’s the purpose you are blogging?
This is really important to determine what kind of content you will put in your blog. Some people were blogging just to share their personal life (more self-oriented blog posting), some people were blogging for making money, selling product, share information, websites reviews, and many others. This purpose could change from time to time, but you have to have at least one specific purpose when you are writing a blog post at anytime.
  4. Can you be a consistent person?
People don’t like inconsistency. When people come to your blog, they want fresh content. It means that you need to constantly post new postings. This is hard sometime, especially if you are a busy person who prefer to use spare time to get some rest instead of blogging. Consistency requires sacrifices. Most of the time, those sacrifices are your time and your thought.

After you are considering all of those questions above, you can draw conclusion for yourself, if you are to blogging or not. By knowing yourself better, you are like laying up a good foundation for your blogging life.

The 2nd Lesson – It doesn’t have to be perfect

This was actually my biggest mistake. I used to think that when I blog, everything has to be perfect. I have to have the perfect theme, the perfect plugins to use, the perfect content, the perfect internet presence, high traffic, lots of comments, and so on. The fact is ….They are not going to happen in 1-2 days. Liz Strauss in her article Perfect Blogs, 404 Errors, and Humanity explains this concept pretty clear. Nobody will not get something perfect at the first try. If something is already perfect, there will be no room for improvement, what a boring life it would be.

Your blog needs your constant attention and care in its entire blog life. You will not get it perfect the first time you setup yours. Before, I tried to gather all the information that I need first to make a blog before I actually create a blog. After I gathered “all” the information (I found out later on that my “all” is not nearly “ALL” at all), I setup my blog. To my disappointment, I still need more information, more plugins, more visitors, more, more, and more of other things. There was always something that needs to be fixed or improved as time goes along. Because of this, I stopped blogging several months ago. One thing that get me started to blog again is actually Twitter. As I was following people in twitter, I saw a lot of blog postings that really gave me good knowledge and information from the person I was following. As I was caught up in this Twitter madness, I decided to rejuvenate my blog again ;)

So what should you do now knowing that you can’t make a perfect blog at the first try? really simple…..

The 3rd Lesson – Just do it

I just learned this recently. Despite all of my limitations in web and internet knowledge, I learned you need to “JUST DO IT.” There will be a lot of obstacles along the way, but that obstacles are actually the thing that will be perfecting your blog. “Learning by Doing.” This quote says it all. Perseverance is the key here. You will not stop when problem comes. You fight them instead. Conquer them. As you are conquering them, you will rise as the winner with new knowledge and experience as your trophy.

How about you? For beginner bloggers, what are your difficulties now? For experienced bloggers, what were your initial difficulties and how you overcome it?
